In 2007, a photovoltaic system project at Warsaw University had been implemented. There are a total of 708 photovoltaic modules produces total power of 56 kW and a surface area of 550 m2 installed on the building fascade and roof. There are two types of photovoltaic modules: amorphous and multi-crystalline silicon. The annual energy production is estimated at 38,000 kWh. The system is connected to the local area grid.
The outdoor and indoor test facility was established within the project. This will allow for research to be taken place and will allow for advanced evaluations of emerging photovoltaic technologies. This is available for the Warsaw University of Technology scientists and students.

Electric power from biogas

The Association of Local Authorities of Greater Thessaloniki, as the main agent responsible for the management of the urban solid waste in the Prefecture of Thessaloniki, decided to exploit the potential of biogas as an energy source at one of its landfill sites, to demonstrate the capacity of local authorities to develop environmentally-friendly solutions and raise public awareness of its waste sorting programme.
At the landfill site of Tagarades, biogas is captured in 16 collection wells. Once scrubbed of the hydrogen sulphide that was once contain, it is passed through a cyclone to lower its moisture content, biogas is compressed and directed towards the combustion chamber of a power generation equipment (240 kW). Fuel and combustion air inflows are electronically controlled.
The capacity of the unit is 5 MW and operation started in November 2006.

University of Murcia Micro-Wind Energy Park

Part of the Sustainable Campus project was to study a possible project that would place wind generators in the junction at the Murcia-Molina dividing line. Based on this, the idea was devised for a Wind Energy Park with 20 wind generators, 5 kW each. The first phase included 9 wind generators.
There are basically three objectives sought: information through a demonstration programme in real time for elementary schools, secondary schools, etc., and the community in general; research and studies on how these turbines operate and their electrical production through University research groups; training university students interested in the topic.
More than 360,000 Euros have been invested in installing the nine Vento 5000 wind mill generators built by WINDECO, with which energy power is obtained even with low intensity winds.

Varese Ligure towards 100% renewable

The small rural village of Varese Ligure with its 2400 inhabitants was the first local authority in Liguria to install two 0.75 MW wind power generators.

At Prà (a western Genoa’s suburb), the pool and sporting facilities placed on “fascia di rispetto” (safeguard area of harbour) were provided with a new plant for production of hot water by solar energy.

100% locally produced renewable Energy

A new city district, the Western Harbour, is supplied by 100% locally produced renewable energy. The concept is based on local conditions for energy production: water, heat and cold storage in water reserves in the bedrock, wind, and partially sun. Over the year, there is balance between used and produced energy within the area. Through a connection to the general electricity and district heating grids of the city, those grids serve as energy. Solar installations (heat collectors and photovoltaics) were included in the design of the buildings and placed visible in the area in order to create an interest in renewable energy sources.
