The Energy Agency of Southwest Finland organises trainings for Housing Associations about sustainable energy solutions, specially related to heating systems. Trainings are organised based on the request of a particular association. Each association usually covers one residential area which usually means that most of the houses are of same age and facing the same problems with regards to their old heating systems. Trainings are related to changing of old heating systems.

Turn the light off when not in use!

“Turn the light off when not in use” was an energy-economy campaign, which was carried out in south of Sweden during 2000-2003. The purpose was to change behaviour from an energy consuming direction to a more energy efficient target. Including small changes in every-day life such as turning the light off, decreasing in-door temperature, etc. will cause a significant result in energy savings. Different ways thought about to reach out with this message to the public was used in the campaign. Campaign strategies used included the involvement of the local press, radio commercials, a small book, postcards, etc.

Affordable Warmth Strategy

Posted by: Adrian Slatcher | Comments Comments Off

Oldham Council has an Affordable Wamrth policy to tackle Fuel Poverty and increase the energy efficiency of homes. Oldham has a high number of people who are vulnerable to fuel poverty, i.e. the elderly and the poor. This leads to around 155 excess winter deaths per year. Working with various partners, Oldham MBC set up a plan to ensure that residents are given the opportunity to access energy efficiency assistance and advice. OMBC was also at the forefront of establishing an Energy Efficiency Advice Centre. An ‘Affordable Warmth Access Referral Mechanism’ was introduced. This involves front line staff being trained to recognise the causes and effects of Fuel Poverty. So far 170 staff have been trained in this area.

Each year, a list of the premiums and incentives for energy saving addressed to households is updated. During the year, an information campaign on the possibilities offered is carried out by means of a publicity campaign, a booklet, updated information on the Official Website of the Administration of Environment and Energy and during any event, action or project linked to energy efficiency or sustainable development in the City.
In 2008, the Brussels-Capital Region proposes incentives for insulation (roof, wall, window, and solar protection), the purchase of less energy consuming electric household appliances (Fridge A++…) or heating installations (condensation boiler, regulation systems…), the installation of solar systems (photovoltaic, water solar boiler) and for individual household energy audit.

In Brussels, 41% of the energy is consumed by households and a 70% of CO2 is produced by the heating of residential and tertiary services’ buildings. Since 2005, the “Défi Energie” (energy challenge for households) aims to change behaviour in energy consumption of a large number of individual households through individual public engagement. The objectives are to reduce 1 ton CO2 emissions per household mainly through behavioural changes in heating and electrical consumptions as well as through a greener mobility.
Last winter, to extend the number of households engaged in the Energy challenge, “energy relays” were recruited and trained to become facilitators in their community groups (associations, sports clubs…) and to develop new specific awareness and pedagogical support.
Currently, more than 2000 households are participating in the challenge and have succeeded in achieving the 1 ton CO2 reduction target.
The Energy Challenge is therefore a ludic approach to seriously contribute to the fight against climate change.

Step2Save is a joint project from the City of Amsterdam, energy company NUON, housing corporation Far-West and Ymere and is sponsored by Philips. It consists on providing energy advice and an energy box to more to more than 10.000 social households in the City of Amsterdam. At the same time, this project aims to offer job experience as energy advisers to young unemployed people without basic qualifications.
As a result, the Step2Save reduces CO2 emissions, helps social housing households to reduce energy use and money and finally gives an opportunity to young unemployed to receive education and have a job for at least one year, facilitating their introduction to the job market.

This project is regarding citizen engagement and behavioural change initiatives. These initiatives are a very important component with regards to environmental protection as well as the improvement of life quality and health protection. Through initiative, citizen sensitization can be increased. As for the citizen engagement and behavioral change initiative, our municipality is in cooperation with the local environmental clubs, no-governmental organizations (NGOs), no-profit organizations, the ministry of education and other authorities. The citizens are aware of the initiatives through planning events, such as concerts, meetings, public discussions and lectures. Some eco- activities such as tree planting and city cleaning were held. The municipality itself holds seminars and distributes informative leaflets (for example leaflets about saving water, “greener” offices, eco-friendly transportation, etc). In addition, the municipality participates with eco-programs which are taking place in schools which are included in the framework of environmental education .e.g. the implementation of an educative program about recycling. The municipality environmental office is open to proposals and provides environmental information to every citizen. The office of volunteers participate by offering aid with all occurring environmental activities.

Wythenshawe Forever!

Posted by: Adrian Slatcher | Comments Comments Off

W4E was a project initiated by three Manchester-based organisations with the aim to deliver locally relevant messages about climate change to a deprived area of South Manchester, Wythenshawe. From the outset, the project was designed and delivered by the people of Wythenshawe, working alongside artists, experts and partners and because of this a sense of long-term ownership was created, reaching far beyond the scope of short-term projects delivered by external agencies. In total the project saved 6,972 kg of CO2 but more importantly locally relevant messages were produced for people living in one of the most deprived areas of the UK.

Hulme Energy Action Team, Manchester

Posted by: Adrian Slatcher | Comments Comments Off

Hulme Energy Action Team (HEAT) is a local initiative started by Action for Sustainable Living to help Hulme residents save money and reduce CO2 emissions through community energy saving measures. It is a local partnership of residents and organisations working to develop sustainable energy solutions which will run alongside Manchester City Council’s fuel poverty relief programme and enhance them. The project supports local training and the development of local ‘energy champions’, as well as setting-up co-operative buying systems to deliver affordable warmth across all neighbourhoods in the Hulme community.
HEAT has been established so that Hulme residents can: Bulk buy energy efficient products and services, source funding for large-scale energy saving campaigns, understand local attitudes and practices around energy use, assist local people to create local solutions, whilst developing local skills and involvement, and work together as a community.
