“Green Roofs” in school buildings

Introduction

The “green roof” program is an effort to add green areas on roofs and vertical surfaces of selected municipal and public buildings.  It started with the creation of horizontal and vertical pergolas in certain school buildings.

Objectives and target audience

Project’s objectives:
a)    to reduce the energy consumption of buildings;
b)    to improve the appearance of buildings;
c)    to increase the green surfaces in Thessaloniki;
d)    to offer a good, low-cost and practical example that can be easily adopted by all citizens.

Target audience: All citizens of the Municipality of Thessaloniki

Financial Resources and Partners involved

The project was financed by the Municipality of Thessaloniki.

Process

Decision – Design – low cost Construction

Results

The program was recently implemented in 4 school units, but it hasn’t yet been widely adopted by the citizens.

Critical Success Factors / Challenges

The basic idea was to eliminate the tasks and cost of the process to the absolute minimum in order for the “green roof” program to become widespread all over Thessaloniki.
