Intelligent and energy efficient buildings (both refurbishment and new build)

By Adrian Slatcher

Introduction

Reduction of pollution and improvement of local air

Objectives and target audience

The objectives are as follows:-

  • Implementation of sustainable development principles- Achieving a sustainable energy future;
  • Environmental benefits- Reduction of greenhouse gases emissions and local air pollution;
  • Saving energy, reduction of energy use;
  • Economic benefits – Lower energy bills.

The target group are the citizens of  Amaroussion’s municipality.  Project’s application: to minicipal buildings (such as the municipal swimming pool, and school units).

Financial Resources and Partners involved

The Municipality finances the project either from national (co-funded by the 3rd CFP for Greece) or European funds. The Centre of Renewable Energy Recourses (CRES) is partner of the project and has a consulting role as well. The installation of a photovoltaic system was co-funded both of the European Commission and the Greek Ministry of Development.

Process

  • Definition of energy consumption needs;
  • Drafting of a guide on the specifications of energy planning;
  • Buildings Study;
  • Application of energy efficient technologies;
  • Measurements and comparisons of energy consumption before and after the application of energy efficient technologies.

Results

It appears that initiation of these projects have caused a reduction.  There is a reduction, as far as it concerns the concentrations of CO, NOx, SO2 and benzene. There are economic benefits as well due to the lower bills.

Critical Success Factors / Challenges

The key issues for success are:-

  • Economical support;
  • Smart studies in the existing buildings in order to achieve the best energy efficiency;
  • Political support and intention.
